Recipe Details
- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Cook Time: 50–65 minutes
- Total Time: About 1 hour 15 minutes
- Servings: 6–8
- Difficulty: Easy
- Method: Oven-baked
- Pan: 9 × 13-inch baking dish
Ingredients
For the Sweet Potatoes
- 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into ½-inch rounds or thick half-moons
- ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter
- 1 cup (200 g) packed brown sugar
- ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ cup (60 ml) water or orange juice, optional
Optional Additions
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp orange zest
- ½ cup chopped pecans
- Mini marshmallows for topping
- Pinch of cayenne pepper for a subtle sweet-heat flavor
Directions
1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Peel the sweet potatoes and rinse them well.
- Slice them into approximately ½-inch-thick rounds or thick half-moons.
- Try to keep the pieces relatively similar in size so they cook evenly.
- Arrange the sliced sweet potatoes in a lightly greased 9 × 13-inch baking dish.
2. Make the Brown Sugar Glaze
- Place the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat.
- Once melted, add the brown sugar and granulated sugar.
- Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Pour in the water or orange juice, if using.
- Stir gently until the sugars dissolve and the mixture becomes smooth and glossy.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer for about 2–3 minutes.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
Do not boil the glaze aggressively. A gentle simmer is enough to create a smooth buttery sauce without making it overly thick before baking.
3. Coat the Sweet Potatoes
- Pour the warm butter-sugar glaze evenly over the sweet potatoes.
- Use a spatula or spoon to gently toss the slices so they’re coated on all sides.
- Spread the sweet potatoes into an even layer as much as possible.
4. Bake
- Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
- Bake for 30 minutes.
- Carefully remove the foil.
- Spoon some of the bubbling glaze over the sweet potatoes.
- Continue baking uncovered for another 20–30 minutes.
The sweet potatoes are ready when they can be easily pierced with a fork and the glaze has thickened and become glossy.
5. Caramelize the Glaze
For an extra-rich, caramelized finish:
- During the final 5–10 minutes, spoon the glaze over the sweet potatoes once or twice.
- If desired, increase the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) for the final few minutes.
- Watch carefully so the sugar doesn’t burn.
6. Rest and Serve
- Remove the sweet potatoes from the oven.
- Let them rest uncovered for 10–15 minutes.
- Spoon the thickened buttery glaze over the top.
- Serve warm.
The glaze will continue to thicken slightly as the sweet potatoes cool.
Chef’s Tips
- Choose firm, medium-to-large sweet potatoes that are similar in size.
- Don’t slice them too thin or they may become mushy during baking.
- Keep the slices relatively uniform for even cooking.
- For the richest flavor, use unsalted butter so you can control the salt.
- Don’t skip the vanilla—it rounds out the sweetness and adds a beautiful depth of flavor.
- The sauce may look loose when it first comes out of the oven. It thickens as it cools.
- Baste the sweet potatoes with the glaze during baking to keep the tops glossy and flavorful.
- Let the dish rest before serving so the glaze has time to cling to the potatoes.
Optional Flavor Variations
🍊 Orange-Glazed Sweet Potatoes
Use orange juice instead of water and add 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest.
🌰 Pecan Candied Sweet Potatoes
Scatter ½ cup toasted chopped pecans over the sweet potatoes during the final 10 minutes of baking.
🌶️ Sweet & Spicy
Add a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper to the brown sugar glaze for a subtle kick.
🥃 Bourbon Version
Add 1–2 tablespoons bourbon to the glaze after removing it from the heat for a deeper Southern-inspired flavor.
☁️ Marshmallow-Topped
Add mini marshmallows during the final 5–8 minutes of baking and bake until puffed and lightly golden.
Make-Ahead Instructions
You can prepare the sweet potatoes and glaze several hours ahead of time.
For best results:
- Assemble the dish.
- Cover and refrigerate.
- Bring it close to room temperature before baking.
- Bake according to the instructions, allowing a little extra time if the dish is still chilled.
For holiday meals, they can also be baked earlier in the day and gently reheated before serving.
Storage
Store leftover candied sweet potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheating
Reheat in a covered baking dish at 350°F (175°C) until hot, or warm individual portions in the microwave.
If the glaze has thickened too much, add a tablespoon or two of water or orange juice before reheating.
