Ingredients
For the Chicken
- 250 g chicken breast, 1 large
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
For the Salad
- 4 cups chopped romaine lettuce
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- ½ cucumber, sliced or diced
- ½ small red onion, thinly sliced
- ½ cup sweet corn, drained
- ½ avocado, diced
- ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ¼ cup crispy bacon, chopped
- ¼ cup croutons, optional
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or green onions
For the Steakhouse Dressing
- ⅓ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons sour cream or Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1–2 tablespoons water or milk, as needed
- Salt, to taste
Instructions
1. Prepare the chicken
Place the chicken breast between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper.
Gently pound the thickest part until the chicken has an even thickness of about ½–¾ inch. This helps it cook evenly and stay juicy.
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels.
Rub both sides with olive oil, then season evenly with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
2. Cook the chicken
Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
Add the seasoned chicken and cook for approximately 5–7 minutes per side, depending on thickness.
The chicken is done when the center reaches 165°F (74°C).
Transfer to a plate and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
For extra steakhouse-style flavor, allow the chicken to develop a deep golden-brown crust before flipping.
3. Make the dressing
In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice.
Add the garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
Whisk until smooth.
If the dressing is too thick, add 1 tablespoon water or milk at a time until it reaches your preferred consistency.
Taste and adjust the salt, pepper, or lemon juice as needed.
4. Prepare the salad
Add the chopped romaine to a large salad bowl.
Top with the cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, sweet corn, avocado, cheddar cheese, bacon, and croutons.
Keep the ingredients arranged in sections if you want a restaurant-style presentation.
5. Slice the chicken
After resting, slice the chicken breast against the grain into thin strips.
This makes the chicken more tender and easier to eat with the salad.
6. Assemble
Arrange the sliced chicken over the salad.
Drizzle generously with the steakhouse dressing, or serve the dressing on the side.
Finish with fresh parsley or sliced green onions and an extra sprinkle of black pepper.
Serve immediately.
Chef’s Tips
- Don’t skip the resting time. Allowing the chicken to rest for 5 minutes keeps the juices inside.
- Pound the chicken evenly so the thinner sections don’t dry out before the thickest part cooks.
- For the best crust, make sure the chicken is dry before seasoning.
- Add the dressing just before serving to keep the lettuce crisp.
- If preparing the salad ahead, keep the avocado, croutons, chicken, and dressing separate until serving.
- For an even more authentic steakhouse flavor, cook the chicken in a cast-iron skillet.
Optional Steakhouse Additions
Make the salad even heartier with:
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Caramelized onions
- Roasted corn
- Crispy fried onions
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Blue cheese crumbles
- Shredded Parmesan
- Grilled bell peppers
Dressing Variations
Creamy Ranch
Replace the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce with 1–2 tablespoons ranch seasoning.
Smoky Chipotle
Add 1 teaspoon chipotle sauce and a squeeze of lime.
Honey Mustard
Replace the ketchup with 1 tablespoon honey and increase the Dijon mustard to 2 teaspoons.
Blue Cheese Steakhouse Dressing
Add 2–3 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese to the finished dressing.
Make-Ahead Instructions
The chicken can be seasoned and cooked up to 2 days ahead.
Prepare the dressing and refrigerate it separately.
Store the salad vegetables separately from the lettuce when possible, especially the tomatoes and cucumber, to prevent the greens from becoming watery.
Assemble everything just before serving.
Storage
Store leftover dressed salad in the refrigerator and consume within 1 day for the best texture.
Undressed salad components can generally be kept refrigerated for 2–3 days, while cooked chicken should be refrigerated in an airtight container and used within 3–4 days.
