Recipe Information

  • Prep Time: 2 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 5–7 minutes
  • Total Time: About 10 minutes
  • Servings: 4–6
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Method: Stovetop

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (about 95 g) popcorn kernels
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) vegetable oil
  • 50 g (about 3½ tablespoons) unsalted butter
  • ½ teaspoon fine salt, or to taste

Instructions

1. Prepare the Popcorn

Place a large, heavy-bottomed pot or saucepan over medium heat.

Add the vegetable oil and 2–3 popcorn kernels.

Cover the pot with a lid and wait until the test kernels pop.

This lets you know the oil has reached the right temperature.

2. Add the Remaining Kernels

Once the test kernels have popped, carefully add the remaining popcorn kernels.

Immediately cover the pot with the lid.

Gently shake the pot once or twice to coat the kernels with oil.

3. Pop the Corn

Keep the pot over medium heat.

Every few seconds, carefully shake the covered pot back and forth while keeping it on the burner.

This helps prevent the popcorn from burning and encourages unpopped kernels to reach the hot oil.

You should hear the kernels begin popping rapidly.

4. Know When to Stop

Once the popping slows to approximately 2–3 seconds between pops, remove the pot from the heat immediately.

Keep the lid on for another 10–15 seconds in case a few final kernels pop.

Do not wait for every single kernel to pop, as doing so can burn the popcorn.

5. Melt the Butter

While the popcorn is popping, melt the butter in a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl.

For an especially crisp popcorn, gently simmer the butter for a minute or two and use the clear butterfat while leaving any milk solids behind.

For everyday popcorn, simply melt the butter until completely liquid.

6. Season the Popcorn

Transfer the freshly popped popcorn to a large bowl.

Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the popcorn.

Sprinkle with the fine salt.

Toss gently but thoroughly until every piece is lightly coated.

Taste and add more salt if desired.

7. Serve

Serve the popcorn immediately while it’s warm, buttery, and crisp.

For movie-night serving, transfer it to individual bowls or a large sharing bowl.

Chef’s Tips

  • Use a large pot: Popcorn expands dramatically as it cooks.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pot: Too many kernels can steam instead of crisping properly.
  • Shake frequently: This helps distribute heat and reduces burning.
  • Remove from heat promptly: Waiting too long after the popping slows can scorch the bottom layer.
  • Use fine salt: It clings to the popcorn much better than coarse salt.
  • Add butter gradually: Tossing while drizzling helps distribute it evenly rather than soaking only the popcorn at the bottom.

Easy Variations

Extra Buttery Popcorn

Increase the butter to 70–75 g for a richer, more indulgent snack.

Garlic Butter Popcorn

Add ¼ teaspoon garlic powder and a little dried parsley to the melted butter.

Cheesy Popcorn

Sprinkle with finely grated Parmesan while the popcorn is still warm.

Spicy Popcorn

Add ¼–½ teaspoon chili powder, cayenne, or smoked paprika.

Sweet & Salty Popcorn

Add a light sprinkle of sugar along with the salt for a classic sweet-and-savory combination.

Caramel Butter Popcorn

Use the finished butter popcorn as the base for homemade caramel popcorn.

Storage

Homemade butter popcorn is best eaten immediately.

If you have leftovers, allow them to cool completely and store them in an airtight container or zip-top bag at room temperature for up to 2 days.

For the best crunch, keep moisture away from the popcorn.

Final Result

Light, fluffy homemade butter popcorn coated in rich melted butter and fine salt. It’s crisp, savory, and incredibly easy to make—perfect for a cozy movie night or anytime a fresh batch of popcorn is calling your name.
