  • Vegetable oil, for deep frying

Instructions

1. Prepare the Prawns

If the prawns have not already been peeled and deveined, remove the shells and devein them.

Leave the tails attached if you want a more attractive presentation and an easy handle for dipping.

Pat the prawns thoroughly dry with paper towels.

Removing excess moisture helps the coating adhere properly and produces a crispier finished texture.

2. Season the Prawns

Place the prawns in a bowl.

Season with the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

Toss gently until all of the prawns are evenly coated.

Allow them to sit for approximately 5 minutes while you prepare the breading station.

3. Set Up the Breading Station

Prepare three shallow bowls or dishes.

In the first dish, place the all-purpose flour.

In the second dish, add the beaten eggs.

In the third dish, place the panko breadcrumbs.

Arrange the dishes in this order:

Flour → Egg → Panko

This makes the coating process quick and organized.

4. Coat the Prawns

Take one seasoned prawn at a time.

First, dredge it lightly in the flour, making sure the entire surface is coated.

Shake off any excess flour.

Next, dip the prawn into the beaten egg, allowing the excess egg to drip back into the bowl.

Finally, place it into the panko breadcrumbs.

Press the panko gently onto the surface so it adheres well.

Repeat with the remaining prawns.

5. Heat the Oil

Pour enough vegetable oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed saucepan or Dutch oven to allow the prawns to fry comfortably.

Heat the oil to approximately 350°F (175°C).

Use a kitchen thermometer for the most consistent results.

Safety note: Never leave hot oil unattended and keep water away from the hot oil.

6. Fry the Prawns

Carefully lower the breaded prawns into the hot oil in small batches.

Do not overcrowd the pan, as adding too many prawns at once can lower the oil temperature and result in a greasy coating.

Fry for approximately 2–3 minutes, turning once if necessary, until the coating is deeply golden and crisp and the prawns are cooked through.

7. Drain

Remove the prawns from the oil using a slotted spoon, spider strainer, or tongs.

Place them on a wire rack set over a baking sheet or a paper towel-lined plate.

Allow excess oil to drain for a few moments.

For the crispiest results, a wire rack is preferable because it prevents the bottom of the prawns from becoming soggy.

8. Serve

Arrange the crispy prawns on a serving platter.

Serve immediately with plenty of fresh lemon wedges.

Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the prawns just before eating for a bright contrast to the rich, crispy coating.

Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

Chef’s Tips

Dry the Prawns Well

Moisture can prevent the flour and breadcrumbs from sticking properly. Pat the prawns thoroughly dry before seasoning.

Press in the Panko

Gently pressing the breadcrumbs onto the prawns creates a thicker, more secure coating that fries beautifully.

Don’t Overcrowd the Oil

Fry in batches to maintain a consistent temperature and ensure the prawns become crisp rather than greasy.

Keep the Oil Hot

Aim for approximately 350°F (175°C). If the oil temperature drops too much, the coating can absorb excess oil.

Don’t Overcook the Prawns

Large prawns cook quickly. Remove them as soon as they’re golden, crisp, and cooked through.

How to Tell When the Prawns Are Done

The prawns should have:

  • A deep golden-brown coating
  • A crisp exterior
  • An opaque, pearly interior
  • A firm but tender texture

Avoid cooking them for significantly longer than necessary, as overcooked prawns can become rubbery.

Extra-Crispy Tips

For an especially crunchy coating:

  1. Use panko breadcrumbs rather than regular breadcrumbs.
  2. Press the panko firmly onto the egg-coated prawns.
  3. Keep the oil around 350°F (175°C).
  4. Fry in small batches.
  5. Drain on a wire rack rather than stacking the prawns.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these crispy prawns with:

  • Lemon wedges
  • Sweet chili sauce
  • Garlic aioli
  • Tartar sauce
  • Sriracha mayo
  • Cocktail sauce

They also pair beautifully with:

  • French fries

Storage

Crispy prawns are best enjoyed immediately after frying.

If you have leftovers, allow them to cool completely and refrigerate them in an airtight container.

Refrigerator: Up to 2 days.

The coating will soften during storage, but the prawns can be reheated to restore some of their crispness.

Reheating

For the best results, reheat in an air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for 3–5 minutes or in a hot oven until warmed through and crisp.

Avoid microwaving when possible, as it can make the panko coating soft.

Recipe Summary

These Crispy Prawns feature large, juicy prawns coated in seasoned flour, egg, and crunchy panko breadcrumbs before being fried to golden perfection.

Serve them piping hot with fresh lemon wedges and your favorite dipping sauce for an easy seafood appetizer that’s crispy, juicy, flavorful, and irresistibly delicious.
