Classic Cream Cheese Frosting
Rich, creamy, tangy, and perfectly sweet, this classic cream cheese frosting comes together in minutes. The combination of softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla creates a smooth frosting that’s easy to spread or pipe.
Recipe Information
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: About 3 cups
- Enough for: 24 cupcakes or one 2-layer 9-inch cake
- Difficulty: Easy
- Method: No-cook
Ingredients
- 8 oz (226 g) full-fat cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups (480 g) powdered sugar, sifted
- 1–2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt, optional
Directions
1. Beat the butter
Place the softened butter in a large mixing bowl.
Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2–3 minutes, until pale, smooth, and fluffy.
2. Add the cream cheese
Add the softened cream cheese.
Beat on medium speed for about 1 minute, just until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy.
Don’t overbeat at this stage. Excessive mixing can make cream cheese frosting softer and more difficult to pipe.
3. Add the powdered sugar
Reduce the mixer speed to low.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, about ½–1 cup at a time, mixing after each addition.
Once all the sugar has been incorporated, add the vanilla extract and optional pinch of salt.
4. Whip until smooth
Increase the mixer to medium speed and beat for approximately 1–2 minutes, just until the frosting is smooth, fluffy, and creamy.
Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Do not continue beating longer than necessary.
5. Check the consistency
The frosting should be thick enough to hold its shape but soft enough to spread easily.
If it is too thin, add powdered sugar 1–2 tablespoons at a time.
If it is too thick, add ½ teaspoon milk or heavy cream at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
6. Use or chill
Use the frosting immediately for spreading or piping.
For a firmer frosting, refrigerate it for 20–30 minutes before decorating.
Chef’s Tips
- Use full-fat cream cheese for the best flavor and consistency.
- Use block-style cream cheese rather than whipped or spreadable cream cheese, which can contain extra moisture.
- Let both the butter and cream cheese soften naturally at room temperature.
- Sift the powdered sugar for an exceptionally smooth frosting.
- Don’t overbeat the cream cheese. Too much mixing can make the frosting loose.
- If your kitchen is warm, refrigerate the frosting before piping.
- For a less-sweet frosting, start with 3½ cups powdered sugar and add more to taste.

Piping Tips
For cupcakes and decorative cakes, chill the frosting for 20–30 minutes before piping.
Transfer it to a piping bag fitted with your favorite decorating tip and pipe immediately.
If the frosting becomes too soft while decorating, return it to the refrigerator for another 10–15 minutes.
Storage
Because this frosting contains cream cheese, keep it refrigerated.
Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
If refrigerated, let it sit at room temperature for about 15–30 minutes before using so it becomes spreadable again.
Freezing
Cream cheese frosting can be frozen for up to 2 months.
Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then allow it to soften slightly and beat briefly until smooth before using.
The Result
You’ll have a thick, silky, tangy-sweet frosting with a rich buttery finish. It’s smooth enough to spread beautifully and sturdy enough for simple piping and cake decorating.
